Lauren E. Kemper, Esq.
Maryland Volunteer Lawyers Service, Pro Bono Volunteer Attorney Lauren Kemper, Esq. is a highly skilled trial attorney with extensive experience litigating cases in District and Circuit courts throughout Maryland. She has spent nearly the entirety of her career in the courtroom litigating cases. For over 15 years, she has successfully handled thousands of cases, secured acquittals and reached favorable results for clients charged with a myriad of felony and misdemeanors criminal charges such as murder, arson, robbery, burglary, theft, sex offenses, complex fraud cases, forgery, trafficking, possession of firearm, weapon charges, assaults, drug possession, DUI and other serious traffic offenses.
Lauren earned her bachelor’s degree from Lynchburg University in 2006. Lauren attended Lynchburg University as a recruit for the Women’s Soccer Team, a highly ranked program earning a NCAA Division III National championship in year 2014. As a collegiate athlete, Lauren garnered many esteemed honors and awards: Dean’s List for the Athletic Honor Roll (2003, 2004, 2005, 2006), Academic All-Conference Team in Soccer (2005, 2006), Student Government Association Chairman (2004, 2005), Anderson Leadership Committee (2004), Moot Court Council for the Defense.
Lauren attended Law School at St. Thomas University School of Law. In 2010, she received her juris doctorate degree, graduating law school with honors: Dean’s List (2008, 2009), elected President of Phi Delta Phi, International Legal Honors Society (2009, 2010). Lauren was the recipient of the Outstanding Pro Bono Service Award, a highly notable award recognized at commencement earning her a spot on the graduation stage. As a law student, Lauren obtained the distinguished position as a judicial intern for the Honorable Vance E. Salter, Florida Third District Court of Appeals. Prior to graduating law school, Lauren was selected for the highly coveted and competitive position working as a law clerk with the Maryland Office of the Public Defender in Baltimore City, solidifying her roots here in Maryland and passion for litigation.
Following graduation, Lauren passed the bar and was admitted to practice law in the State of Maryland in 2010. She began her career as an associate attorney working for Bodie Nagle Dolina Smith Law Firm. There she practiced general civil litigation, bankruptcy, collections and creditor rights. Thereafter, she joined the law firm of Pessin Katz Law handling a variety of cases in the areas of medical negligence, personal injury, insurance fraud claims, defense of veterinarian in medical malpractice matters and other health related legal actions. In 2011, Lauren was also admitted to practice in the United States District Court of Maryland.
Lauren’s road to becoming a highly seasoned litigator ultimately began in 2013 when she accepted a position as a public defender and remained steadfast in her commitment to public defense for over a decade. For more than ten years, she served as an asset within the agency trying countless numbers of cases before judges and juries and earning multiple promotions during her tenure. Handling approximately 1,000 cases per year in District Court practice, Lauren appeared in court daily representing clients in all aspects of trial litigation ranging from violent felonies to drug related misdemeanors and serious traffic offenses. Prior to leaving the public sector for private practice, she held the high-ranking title of Circuit Court Felony Trial Attorney, Assistant Public Defender III. In 2015, Lauren was selected as an attorney to be admitted to the Supreme Court of the United States. Lauren was also the District 9 public defender recipient of the Tenacious Advocate Award in 2022 for “Consistently advocating for our clients at every opportunity; you are engaged, prepared, passionate, and assertive. In addition, you are relentless and resourceful in assisting clients with solving problems, legal and otherwise.”
